Session Title: Roadblocks We Create: Removing Institutional Barriers to Study Abroad

Presenters: Susan Lochner, Assistant Director, International Academic Programs, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Cheryl Lochner-Wright, Study Abroad Coordinator, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
Description: Increasing access to study abroad has been a hot topic for years, with a focus on systemic barriers for traditionally underrepresented groups. The White House even held a press conference on this topic in December. But some barriers may be homegrown and more easily addressed on individual campuses. Join us as we reflect on current policies and procedures in our offices that may be creating unintentional roadblocks for certain groups of students, including men and students of color, and consider what needs to happen to encourage better access. Then share your thoughts on removing roadblocks in your own institutional setting.

Participant Comments:
• The session really inspired me to consider the application process at my institution and how we communicate this to students.
• The presenters shared an interesting and data-driven presentation on how they've reflected on the challenges their own institutions presented to students interested in studying abroad.

Both presenters will receive an award of $750 to attend the regional NAFSA conference to present their session.
